Charles Pachter: The Cranbrook Years will showcase new acquisitions by an artist whose practice includes Pop Art and expressionism. During the 1960s, Pachter collaborated with acclaimed Canadian writer Margaret Atwood by illustrating her book of poems Journals of Suzanna Moodie (1970). Created during Pachter’s years at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he completed his Master of Fine Arts degree, this, one of his 6 artist-book projects from the 1960s, is among Pachter’s most important works. Known for his signature Canadian flag paintings, his collaborations with Atwood show him as an expressionist image maker and collaborator, setting the stage for his larger commitment to icons of Canadian history informing his subsequent Pop Art practice. As we continue to respond to art practice in the Detroit-Windsor corridor, Pachter’s Cranbrook story offers an international angle on the region’s creative history and a homecoming for Pachter in Windsor.
