Silvi Simon: Filmatrucs à verres
Media City Film Festival: 17th Annual Edition

May 21 – June 12, 2011

Location: To Be Announced

The AGW will hosts French artist Silvi Simon as part of Media City 17. Simon's Filmatrucs are a series of sculptural film projections that have incorporated materials such as piano wire, fishbowls, mirrors and electric train motors. The most recent Filmatrucs exploit the reflective and refractive properties of carefully suspended glass panes to diffuse and scatter overlapping planes of images, creating a wall-to-wall projection environment. Sound is supplied by the rattle of 16mm film projectors and the chime of the glass panels striking each other.

Silvi Simon works with 16mm and Super8 film in cinematic, performative and gallery contexts. She learned techniques of artisanal filmmaking at Atélier MTK, an experimental film laboratory in Grenoble. As a member of the Strasbourg-based collective Burstscratch, she has presented live film performances at venues across Europe, including VideoEx (Zürich) and the IFF Rotterdam. Her film installations have been exhibited at venues such as the L6 Kunsthaus (Freiburg), the Film Gallery (Paris) and Cinema Nova (Brussels). This exhibition of Filmatrucs organized by Media City and the AGW is the first presentation of her work in North America. She lives in Strasbourg, France.

Media City Film Festival partners with the AGW to celebrate its 17th annual edition, May 24-29, 2011. Each year the festival attracts filmmakers and audience members from around the globe to participate in five days of film screenings, live performances, exhibitions and artist's discussions in Windsor and Detroit. Media City 17th edition will present screenings at the Capitol Theatre and Arts Centre, with adjunct events at the AGW, the Burton Theatre and other locations TBA. Over the years the festival has achieved critical acclaim and international recognition for its "sheer excellence in programming" and is recognized as a leading venue in the world of artist's film and video.
