“To celebrate the launch of several exciting exhibitions and the change to summer weather, we are taking this opportunity to open the gallery (and our balconies overlooking the river) a little later to allow guests to experience the beauty of our space in a different way,” says Jennifer Matotek, AWE’s Executive Director. “AWE at Night is keeping with our mission to be a gallery for the 21st century by bringing together incredible community partners to facilitate a thrilling evening not to be missed.”
Exhibitions opening in June include Jude Abu Zaineh: In the Presence of Absence, Howie Tsui: Retainers of Anarchy, Marcel Dzama: Illustrations and Other Worlds, and Itee Pootoogook: Hymns to the Silence. In addition to these, there are several ongoing exhibitions; Looking Back, Looking Forward, Grey Matter: Your Brain on Art, and Michele Goulette: DOWNRIVER.
There will be pop-up local food and drink from WindsorEats, serving margaritas and beer; Rico Taco, serving Elotes, (Mexican street corn); and Cooper’s Hawk Winery’s wine. There will also be opportunities to mix and mingle with fellow art enthusiasts while listening to sweet tunes. There will also be two artist-led activities during the evening:
Rainbow Rorshach Prints with Derrick Carl Biso: Guests are invited to join artist and curator Derrick Carl Biso in the AWE education studio from 5-9pm to create one-of-a-kind rainbow Rorschach prints. This activity is inspired by the exhibitions Looking Back, Looking Forward and Grey Matter: Your Brain on Art.
Artist Tour with Jude Abu Zaineh: Artist Jude Abu Zaineh will be on the second floor from 7-8pm for a guided tour of the exhibition, ي حضرة الغياب | In the Presence of Absence. This exhibition forms part of Below the 6, a series that focuses on artists based in Southwestern Ontario whose practices are socially and politically minded. About Art Windsor-Essex (AWE)
Established in 1943, AWE is the largest public art gallery in Southwestern Ontario and has grown with incredible support from the Windsor-Essex community. For over 75 years, AWE has experienced great change - in leadership, our collection, and our address. With every adaptation, we keep getting better at what we do: inspiring growth through the power of art. At AWE, we share historical Canadian, Indigenous, and contemporary art with the Windsor-Essex community in inventive and creative ways. Through our activities, we spark creativity and conversations, and educate and engage. With 15,000 square feet of exhibition space, new takes on our permanent collection of nearly 4,000 artworks, and through unexpected partnerships, AWE is the creative heart of Windsor-Essex. At Art-Windsor Essex, change happens here.
