16mm Film Workshops with Nicky Hamlyn (UK)

Saturday, May 12, 2012 | 11 am – 4:30 pm

Media City Film Festival partners with the AGW yearly to celebrate its May festival which attracts filmmakers and audience members from around the globe to participate in five days of film screenings, live performances, exhibitions and artist's discussions in Windsor and Detroit. Over the years the festival has achieved critical acclaim and international recognition for its "sheer excellence in programming" and is recognized as a leading venue in the world of artist's film and video. In partnership with the 18th edition of Media City Film Festival and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto, the Art Gallery of Windsor is thrilled to offer FREE 16mm film workshops led by acclaimed English filmmaker Nicky Hamlyn.

During these one-day intensive workshops, participants will be introduced to basic 16mm film production. The workshops will begin with a technical introduction to the Bolex spring-wound camera, light meter and lights. After this, participants will jointly shoot a roll of black and white film which will then be hand-processed in a developing tank. When the film is dry, the work will be projected and a rough digital transfer will be made. Each participant will leave with a digital copy of the film to take away for editing. Although the workshop does not cover editing, there will be an introduction to the various ways in which film can be taken forward into post-production.

Each one-day workshop will be limited to a maximum of six participants. There will only be three workshops in total, so early registration is a must.
