Jayce Salloum: history of the present (selected works 1985-2009)

April 29 – July 10, 2011

Location: Second Floor Gallery

Vancouver-based media artist Jayce Salloum has had numerous exhibitions in North and South America, Europe, Japan and the Middle East. After 22 years living and working in San Francisco, Banff, Toronto, San Diego, Beirut, and New York, Salloum currently produces solo and collaborative work in his Downtown Eastside neighbourhood. With a focus on themes of personal and geopolitical migration and trans-national identity, he explores concepts of transition and dislocation.

Jayce Salloum: history of the present (selected works 1985-2009) draws on almost three decades of photo-based artwork in various mediums by the Kelowna-born and raised artist. The exhibit includes room-scale installations, photographs, archival material, a multi-panel piece and collaborative pieces. As a social activist and curator, Salloum has gained international renown for a distinctive body of video work that depicts, in a provocative, experimental and personal fashion, representations of Lebanon, the Middle East, and the Arab world as viewed by Western media and culture. More recently, the multidimensional personal/social/political/geographical approach he has brought to bear on issues of nationalism, borders, homeland, culture and cultural conflict in the Middle East has been extended to other international locales and 'hotspots' as well.
