‘To photograph is to appropriate the thing photographed.'
- Susan Sontag, On Photography
We live in an image-saturated world. From family albums to police files, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, to our mobile phones, digital cameras, hard drives with file sharing programs, we navigate through a shapeless empire of accrued images. Since the camera is literally an archiving machine every photograph is an archival object. This exhibition brings together a range of photographic practices - from ones that are conceptually staged to documentation and archiving practices - that examine, memorialize and interpret the conditions of the post-industrial landscapes and built environment of the Windsor/Detroit region through the lens of various photographers from the collection of the Art Gallery of Windsor.
