The exhibition Looking Back, Looking Forward is curated by Derrick Carl Biso, the Special Initiatives Coordinator at Art Windsor-Essex, 2020-21.
Looking Back, Looking Forward includes artworks by Stephen Andrews, Michael Bidner, John Brown, David Buchan, Evergon, Robert Flack, Martha Fleming and Lyne Lapointe, General Idea, Frances Loring, Cyndra MacDowall, Regan Morris, Charles Pachter and Florence Wyle.
Looking Back, Looking Forward is an exhibition of artworks from the Art Windsor-Essex Collection. These artworks were made by artists who are also a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Intersex, Asexual and/or any other sexual and gender minority), historically and living. The exhibition has a regional focus, featuring artists who have lived in Ontario (particularly the Southern region, ranging from Toronto to Windsor).
AWE has reproduced a portion of the Windsor- Essex County 2SLGBTQIA+ Timeline within the exhibition. The timeline was created and compiled by Walter T. Cassidy, Chair of Windsor/Essex Rainbow Alliance. The section, designed by Windsor artist, Julie Hall, illustrates the years of creation of the artworks in Looking Back, Looking Forward.
The Special Initiatives Project was developed to generate greater access to arts, culture, and heritage experiences for 2SLGBTQIA+youth in the region. Programming, such as the exhibition Looking Back, Looking Forward, is designed to introduce discussions about identity, an appreciation of different aspects to human identity, and the fluidity and evolving nature of sexual and gender identity over time. This discussion can be prompted through exploring the histories of gender and sexual identity through the art and lives of the artists, and as well as reflection on our own gender and sexual identity today.
About the Special Initiatives Coordinator:
Mx. Derrick Carl Biso uses they/them/their pronouns exclusively. They recently completed the role of Special Initiatives Coordinator at the AGW. They also labour as an artist, community organizer, educator, and graphic designer. Derrick Carl is influenced by their experiences as a queer and nonbinary person from rural Prince Edward Island, their education in Philosophy and Diversity and Social Justice Studies from UPEI, and more recently from labouring and organizing in downtown Windsor, Ontario. They are particularly interested in aspects of human identity, expressions of creativity and culture, relationships and responsibilities, ethics, the erotic, history, conscientization, and the natural world. Derrick Carl recognizes that our liberation from oppression is a shared struggle that requires solidarity across identity categories. Derrick Carl is currently employed as the Program Administrator and Facilitator with the QLink Windsor-Essex collaborative.
